According to the Food Waste Index report released by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in early March, nearly 1 billion tons of food is wasted globally every year, about twice the best estimate in the past. The report points out: 1/3 of the food output has never been eaten, and food waste causes 10% of carbon emissions.
The United Nations report also covers food waste in restaurants and shops, accounting for 17% of the total food waste. In addition to the food waste in farms and supply chains, a total of 1/3 of the food output has never been eaten. Billions of people who are hungry or unable to afford a healthy diet are difficult to feed due to food waste, and the environment is greatly affected. Food waste and loss cause about 10% of emissions, contributing to the climate crisis, and intensive farming is the main cause of the biodiversity crisis and global pollution.
If food waste is a country, its carbon emissions will be second only to the United States and China, ranking third in the world. UNEP expert Martina Otto said: "Food waste will cause three times the loss, not only food loss, but also the natural and economic resources used to produce food. Conversely, it can create a win-win-win situation."
Cooking Well
Use up every part of the ingredients, such as broccoli stems that remove the crude fiber, and then eat; or don’t discard the fruits and vegetables because they are ugly. When boiling the soup, avoid cooking the old hot soup and avoid eating leftover soup residue, because the soup residue has the most nutritious value and avoids food waste!
